Glycoala is a very stable form of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, which is a photosensitising drug. It uses glycosphere nanotechnology to deliver both 5-ALA and Hyaluronic Acid in to the skin where an enzymatic process converts the 5-ALA in to Protoporphyrin lX, a photoactive chemical. Activation using a red LED light source with appropriate energy produces a photodynamic response, with the production of oxygen free radicals leading to specific effects on skin. It is particularly useful for treating oily skin, inflammatory and comedonal acne, sebaceous hyperplasia and photodamage.
This presentation aims to discuss its mode of action, indications, patient selection and demonstrate the treatment protocol and technique, together with the use of an ultrasonic blade for sonophoresis of the Glycoala.
